Trivium to Guest on Iron Maiden Final Frontier World Tour Conclusion

Trivium's Corey Beaulieu onstage.

Trivium will appear as special guests at the final show of Iron Maiden’s The Final Frontier World Tour at London’s O2 Arena on Aug. 6, 2011.

By the time the tour concludes in London that evening, Maiden will have played 101 shows for more than 2 million fans in 40 nations since the tour kicked off in Dallas in June 2010.

“We couldn’t be more honored and excited to share a stage with the legendary Iron Maiden,” said Triviums’s Matt Heafy. “This will be Trivium’s first U.K. show in a long time, and we’ll have a new record under our belts to debut. Lights out London for an immense night of metal. Up the Irons.”

Tickets for the show are on sale now and are available from www.livenation.co.uk.

Sepultura’s Kisser to Sub For Ian at July Anthrax/Big Four Shows

Ian: Will sit out several July 2011 Anthrax shows.

In a statement released March 17, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian announced that he will not play several mid-summer Anthrax appearances in Europe and the U.K., as he and his wife, Pearl, are expecting their first child in July.

Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser will sub for Ian at 11 Anthrax shows from July 2 to July 16, including three Big Four shows. After July 16, Ian will resume duties as Anthrax shredder-in-chief.

Ian said the “deeply personal” decision to sit out so many large festival shows was “relatively easy” given his impending parenthood, but nonetheless not one that was taken lightly, as he has been there for everything Anthrax has done for three decades (Ian is the band’s only constant member). Here is his statement in its entirety:

March 17, 2011

Hello my friends, how are you all? I hope you’re all kicking ass.

I know there’s been a lot of rhetoric out there regarding upcoming Anthrax shows, Big Four and otherwise.

I’ve been debating on whether or not to make a public statement about this, as it really pertains to my personal life and I generally like to keep that personal. Because this is affecting my band life, I feel like you, my friends, deserve to hear from me personally.

I will be playing the Big Four show on April 23 in Indio, Calif., as well as the shows in Manila, Bangkok and Japan that will follow the Indio show.

I won’t be playing the shows scheduled from July 2-16 in Europe and the U.K. My wife, Pearl, and I are expecting our first child, and she is due literally the day of the Big Four Sonisphere show in France.

This decision to miss these shows was a deeply personal one. I co-founded this band on July 18, 1981, and for almost 30 years I have been there for everything we’ve ever done.  I have never been faced with anything that would make me even question being there for anything Anthrax-related. Becoming a father is the biggest, best thing that’s ever happened to me, and it made the decision relatively easy. My priority is with my wife and the birth of our first child.

As soon as I was faced with this decision, I knew, as Freddie Mercury so eloquently said, “The show must go on.”

I started thinking about guitar players I knew; guys that I am a fan of; guys that I respect; guys that headbang like Angus was watching them; guys that I listen to and who I thought had the spirit to enable the show to go on.

This wasn’t a hard decision at all. I asked the rest of the band what they thought, and we were on the same page.

We chose Andreas because we feel he can do the gig better than anyone. He has the fire, the attitude and the crushing right hand to do the gig. I’ve played with Andreas at the Roadrunner 25th anniversary show, and I’ve gotten up and played with Sepultura, and we are kindred spirits. We both play every show like we’re going to jail the next day; like it’s the last show we’ll ever play. He has what it takes and he has the experience and history to fucking bring it and make these Anthrax shows something special. I can’t wait to see and hear it for myself!

This year will bring our tenth Anthrax studio record, featuring the return of the one-and-only Joey Belladonna. We’re hard at work finishing it and I can say that from the tracks I have heard, it is going to tear your fucking heads off. I’m looking forward to getting back on the road with the band that is now better than we’ve ever been, and to seeing all your sick faces and banging heads.

Cheers,
Scott

Megadeth Moscow Banjo Signing

Here are Megadeth’s David Ellefson and Chris Broderick at a March 15 meet-and-greet signing in Moscow, at which it appears they have experienced a first.

Watch the clip here, and you’ll see that in addition to signing numerous guitars, the Jackson-wielding half of Megadeth are actually presented by one enterprising fan with a banjo on which to pen their signatures. That’s right, a banjo. It’d be cool to hear Broderick shred “Peace Sells” on it …

Metal Mike Column Debuts in April Guitar World

That Metal Mike—he’s always so great about keeping in touch and keeping Jackson fans up on all his latest news. Most recently, his own monthly column just started running in Guitar World magazine, starting with the April 2011 issue (the one with Jeff Beck on the cover), but we prefer to let him tell you in his own words …

Hello everyone. On newsstands now is the April issue of Guitar World. In it you can find the first installment of my monthly guitar column, properly titled “Metal For Life.” It’s a meat-and-potatoes instructional feature focusing on playing heavy metal. Besides showing readers how I like to approach things, I will also break down and show ideas and techniques from other artists who are making quality metal music.

I’m happy and honored to be able to contribute to my favorite guitar mag. My first lesson is “Single String Carnage,” or a way of playing riffs on a single string.

-Metal Mike

In other MM news, the Jackson-wielding shredder appears on a couple recent releases. These include Scheepers, the long-awaited solo release from Primal Fear vocalist Ralf Scheepers; and Halford IV: Made of Metal, the new studio album by multi-platinum vocalist Rob Halford. Like so:

And we always like family photos around here, and Metal Mike was kind enough to send along the candid shot below of the man himself in 2009 in a relaxed moment in front of the Musonia School of Music in Los Angeles, where the late, great Randy Rhoads once studied and taught. Nice.

Trivium Featured with Malmsteen in April ’11 Guitar World

Neck and neck: Beaulieu and Malmsteen in the April 2011 Guitar World.

Jackson shredders, under no circumstances should you miss the April 2011 issue of Guitar World magazine, in which Trivium guitarists Corey Beaulieu and Matt Heafy sit down with their hero, Swedish shred master Yngwie Malmsteen, to talk shop.

The ever-Jackson-wielding Beaulieu is pictured with his Custom Shop King V™ model, and there’s even a sidebar on “original shredder” Niccolo Paganini. It’s a fascinating feature, so get thee to a newsstand near you; the April GW is on sale now …
