That's just what Jackson truss rods look like dude. You use a little socket wrench to adjust them instead of an Allen key

Is that what that was? Wish i'd known before chewing that off of mine.

It actually took me by suprise when I first popped off the truss rod cover on my RR. Took me ages to find something to adjust it with since I didn't want to shell out for a "genuine" Jackson tube spanner. I actually worked out that a small ring spanner (6mm? 7mm? can't remember exactly) will work fine and they can be easier to come by

I had an el-chepo socket set sitting around. You know the kind with the thin walls? I slipped the socket over the nut and then used an allen wrench to turn it. The socket handle wouldn't fit. My concept was the first time I did my own setup and adjusting so I thought it was normal and the hex heads were funny.
