Hello everybody, I'm new to this forum and need a bit of help. My dilemma is as follows: I have installed the emg 81/85 combo in my Jackson rr3, but I am getting a terrible buzz from the pickups now. I can hear myself play but I have to turn everything way down. I have checked all the connections many times and cannot find where I went wrong. However yesterday I noticed the under the neck pickup their was a wire going to a screw in the body cavity. Does that need to be attached? Are their any other places that should be grounded inside of the guitar? Thank you in advance

EMG's active pickups are all internally shielded and do not require any ground wires. Have you tried replacing the battery? Did you use the supplied 25k pots or did you try and reuse the old 500k ones? Go over the wiring one more time and make sure not only that everything is connected to the right spot but that the connections are secure, if something isn't making good contact that can cause problems. If you can post some decent pics of the wiring I might be able to puzzle it out but it's tricky without actually having it in your hand. If none of that helps you may have to take it to a guitar tech to figure out. Sorry I can't tell you more bro, good luck! \m/

I will look over all the connections and change the battery and try again. I used the 25k potentiometers. I feel like it may be a grounding problem because it is the solder less set-up and I have double checked everything. I will check again though. Thanks, I will respond after I check everything out.

So I changed the battery and looked over the wiring again and noticed that I did have something wired wrong. I was also previously having a problem where the neck pickup was working but I was getting no signal from the bridge pickup. Now that I have switched the wires around the bridge pickup works but the neck doesn't. I feel like it may be an issue with the toggle switch. I'm going to replace it and see if that does the job. No buzzing though, which is great. It may have been a combination of things.

For me, there were 4 cables that went to the board. An output, ground, neck pickup, and bridge pickup. I ended up finding that my pickup selector switch was bad. A simple trip to a radio electronics store helped me with that. Now the guitar sounds better than ever. Thanks for the input.
