I have a DK2m that has always had a problem with its Floyd Rose. After I determined that the Floyd Rose was defective, the guitar sat for a long time unplayed. Then I read about how you can block off the trem. So I did that and now I love the guitar. I play it all the time. Now it stays perfectly in tune, has a great tone, and actually feels good.

The modification: I am considering filling the Floyd Rose trem cavity flush with the surface of the body of the guitar with a thickened marine grade epoxy (West Marine). Even drilling holes in the side so that the epoxy flows in and strengthens the bond of the epoxy in the cavity. Then I want to install a Bigsby.

Can anyone foresee any problems I am not seeing? Will filling the cavity with epoxy affect the tone of the guitar in a negative way? I'd like to hear any arguments pro or con anyone may have.

Thanks in advance for any feedback on this.

I have no idea how using that much epoxy would affect the overall tone, but I would assume that it's density would seriously hamper vibration.. As for the Bixby, they are not very stable units and have different string spacing then a Floyd, the pickup poles would not align with the strings. .. I have a DK2M, and have not had any Floyd issues at all, even when it has been in the case for months.. Perhaps you should consider having a tech do a set up on your axe before resorting to something so irreversible... And if that is not a solution, just leave the trem blocked...

Matre: Thanks for the reply.

In regard to setting up a FR, I can set up my other FR guitar with no problem. I have found other people who have had problems with the JT 580 LP trem. Here's a thread where somebody describes the exact same symptoms my DK2M is having.

Instead of a Bigsby- or any trem at all- could one make a hardtail of that guitar with a Gibson Tune-O-Matic type bridge? Is the string spacing the same (.042?) ?

Do you have any suggestions on how to eliminate the Floyd Rose tremolo?

Gibson spacing is the same as the Bixby.. If you are going to attempt it, look for a Jackson Tunomatic..
