Hi, am new to this forum so unsure if there has already been a topic on this subject but i have a problem with my Jackson DK2M whereby the finish seems so have worn off slightly (from use) from the third to about the fifth fret on the back of the neck. It is only on the part facing down when playing.
So i was wondering if there is a way to sort this out or to refinish it or maybe i would have to refinish the whole neck (which i obviously wouldnt want to have to do). The finishing waring off has lead to it discoloring which i would show you if it would allow me to upload a picture.

Thanks,
Matt.

Sorry to break the bad news, Matt, but the best way to ensure a proper seal is to refinish the back of the neck..

Ahh figured that might be the case, how would I go about doing that then? Ive painted a few guitars but never done anything with necks, what do they use on necks?

I have no idea what specific product is used, but most likely a gloss urethane.. You would have to mask off everything on the front of the neck, using the binding as your starting point.. Then sand down the original finish without touching the binding.. A daunting task requiring a lot of patience.. Best of luck..

Right-o, so any idea where to get this stuff from in the UK? and will it have to be sprayed on?

if i can give a different pov. every guitar i plan to keep, i use a scotch bright pad and remove all the finish on the back of the neck. allowing skin oil to effect the wood. i find it makes for a faster neck. (the new evh musicman guiatrs have no finish on the neck new
)
my latest bass a jackson JS2 has an "oiled" no finish neck. (saved me the trouble). love it.
a guitar is art, but its a tool too. if your gonna actually play it, not just look at it. its finish is going to suffer dings and bangs.
you would be changing the "texture and feel" every time you "fix" the finish of the neck..
no matter what you do if you play it its going to change, just like we do.
the discoloration is probably from your skin oil, or "finger ease" effecting the wood thats exposed.
a tiny amount of Murphy's oil soap might remove some of the gunk in the pores of the wood.

Thanks for your view Jeff, I agree but the lack of finish is irritating when in play it and also I like to have my guitars looking nice as well as playing well. Never mind I'll leave it because I've just noticed that the headstock also has this discolouration so not much I can do but clean it as you said. Thanks!

If it is happening on the headstock, too, it could just be the oxidation of the minerals that had been absorbed by the tree in its natural environment..
